Question by jessie m: Previous owner filled in a pond and now we have swarms of flies over the same patch?
We have these swarms of flies/ Mosquitos or something, sticking right above that same spot. Id say the swarm is about 200 of them at a time and they’re small, you can’t see what they look like cos they’re fast and fly like they’re confused. Can anyone help? My little girl won’t go in the garden because of them. (she’s pathetic over anything creature that flies).

Sounds like there were some dead fish in there. My better guess is that those things are not flies at all, but no-seeums. Awful things.

I wonder if there is an impervious layer at the bottom……plastic, concrete…? That is not allowing drainage. Until that spot drains you will always have a problem. There may indeed be something rotting further down, but it also can be at the surface with lawn thatch. The constant moist spot will breed any number of small moisture loving insects.

I’d say some digging is in order. First to see if the problem is due to organic matter accumulation at the surface……..thatch…….or is the soil moist all the way down.

If the spot isn’t too big…Try spreading some powdered lime on the place..Or spray it heavily with a good insectcide
