The simplest way to build a garden pond is to take a large pot (with no hole in the bottom) or a large bucket, either filled with water, and place it in the desired spot. Or, you could go to a hardware or garden store, like Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Armstrong Nurseries, and buy a pre-made fountain-dealie.
If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, though, building a large “fancy” pond requires some intensive labor.

First, you design the pond, figure out how wide it will be, how deep, what you plan to put in it, etc. Once that’s done, then you locate the spot in your yard where you want your pond to be, and dig it out. Having dug out your pond, you then place large rocks on the bottom, and on the sides, then you use concrete to cement everything together. Once the concrete has dried, I recommend going over with a little plaster, so as to smooth out any cracks or crannies. Then you place a layer of tarp over the pond, fill it with water, then put in dirt and pots of water plants as desired.
