Question by Elsie M: What do I need to do to keep a pond clean.?
Alright, So I live in Nc, and I am putting in a semi large flower garden. I would like to put in a pond, but my fiance says that its not possible unless I have filters, and chemicals and pumps. I am on a small budget and only want a small pond. Around the size of a medium rubbermaid tote. I would like to have 1-4 fish, possible upto 6 if I can put in a few algae eaters. What I would like to know in detail is what do i need to do to keep the pond clean? It is going to be completely home maid, The garden is a good distance away from an outlet, so pumps and what not is not possible. Any info would be helpful, as well as links, and guides. Please dont make me go out to a library, or a book store. I prefer doing research from the computer.

You can start at http://www.pondlady.com
That’s my website. But essentially, all you need is dechlorinated water (no, you can’t just let it sit for a few days), so you need some dechlor. Now balance the pond ecologically with submerged and floating plants. You can have emergents if you like. Use mosquito fish and don’t feed them. In fact, no matter what fish you put in, don’t feed them. They will eat the submerged vegetation and it grows faster than they can it it. You can’t have 5 or 6 fish. You can have two maybe depending on the size of your pond.
Good luck.
